Screening for Plagiarism

Manuscript Submission and Plagiarism Policy

All manuscripts submitted to Journal of Religious Studies are screened using Turnitin similarity detection software. Any paper with evidence of plagiarism or self-plagiarism will be immediately rejected. The journal is committed to ensuring that authors uphold the highest standards of academic integrity, especially concerning the originality of work in theology, philosophy of religion, spirituality, interfaith dialogue, and cultural-religious studies.

What Constitutes Plagiarism?

Plagiarism occurs when an author uses the ideas, information, or words of others without proper credit. Whether intentional or unintentional, plagiarism is a serious academic violation and is unacceptable in international scholarly publishing. Authors must cite all sources appropriately to respect intellectual contributions.

  • Facts and Information: Citations are required when using specific details such as names, dates, places, statistics, or other data from a particular source. This is only exempt when information is considered general knowledge, widely available in multiple references (e.g., "Christianity is the world’s largest religion").
  • Ideas and Concepts: Ideas derived from other scholars must be cited, even if the author develops them further or provides new interpretations (e.g., in theology, hermeneutics, or interfaith studies).
  • Direct Quotations: Any use of another author’s exact words must be enclosed in quotation marks and accompanied by a citation. Four or more consecutive identical words from a source require quotation marks in addition to proper referencing.

Editorial Integrity

Journal of Religious Studies takes academic ethics seriously. The editorial team reserves the right to withdraw an accepted manuscript if evidence of plagiarism, unethical citation practices, or violations of international publishing standards are discovered. Maintaining originality and intellectual honesty is fundamental to advancing scholarly discourse in Religious Studies.
