The Black Man's Grave Site as a Historical Tourist Destination for the People of East Tanjung Jabung, 2006–2024

Abstract

Background
The cultural-based tourism sector (heritage tourism) in Jambi Province plays a crucial role as an instrument
for preserving the nation’s collective memory and reinforcing regional cultural identity. One such site is
located in the coastal area of East Tanjung Jabung Regency, specifically in Simpang Village, Berbak
Subdistrict: the Black Rich Man’s Tomb Site, which holds layers of symbolic meaning and profound
sociocultural value for the community’s way of life.
Objectives
This study aims to analyze the historical dynamics of the site’s existence, dissect the symbolic and cultural
meanings it contains, and evaluate the site’s status along with its supporting and inhibiting factors as a
historical tourism destination from the perspective of sustainable tourism.
Methods
The method used in this study is the historical method, which consists of four stages: heuristics, source
criticism (verification), interpretation, and historiography. Primary data collection was conducted through
field observations and in-depth interviews with the site caretaker, village head, traditional leaders, and
pilgrims/visitors.
Results
The results of the study indicate that the Black Kayo Tomb Site maintains a strong presence as a spiritual
and historical educational space, having undergone significant development in terms of supporting facilities
since the intensive restoration in 2006, as well as adaptive promotion based on digital media.
Conclusion
Overall, the attraction and amenity components at this burial complex are already considered adequate and
of high value; however, the optimization of this tourism site still faces structural constraints in the form of
limited road infrastructure and high water transportation costs to the location.
